William Herman Barrie passed away on January 19, 2024. William, affectionately known by friends and family as "Willie," was born on January 20, 1953 in Plattsburgh, New York to his father, William Barrie and mother, Emily S. Barrie. He was the third of four children.
Favorite family activities that shaped Willie's interests throughout his life were Sunday drives throughout rural New York and a shared love of reading and learning.
As a young man, Willie served four years in the Navy and then worked as a long-haul truck driver for Ward Lumber. In 1983, Willie started working at Whiteface Mountain. He worked for ORDA in various capacities for over 30 years, retiring from Mount Van Hoevenburg in 2015.
Willie was an avid reader, a great trivia player, and Jeopardy lover. His knowledge of history was so vast that Donna, his wife of twenty-five years, often enjoyed learning something new from him.
Willie loved the North Country. He identified with the wild natural spaces of the Adirondacks. The great outdoors was where he worked, sought peace, and where he lived his life exactly as he wished. He was independent, outspoken, and a free spirit.
Willie is survived by his wife Donna Barrie, his daughter, Sara Barrie, brother, Edward "Ed" Barrie, and sister, Emily Barrie. Services will be held on Friday, June 28 at 3 pm at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Au Sable Forks for Willie and his sister, May Barrie, who predeceased him by a week.
Services were entrusted to Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home, 3 College St., Au Sable Forks, NY 12912.
