On March 25, 2024, Rita Mae Rougeau passed away at the age of 79. She is from Spring Hill, FL, and was formally from Au Sable Forks, NY. She moved to Florida in August 2021 and lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Jean & Dale Yourdon.
Rita was born on February 26, 1945, in Plattsburgh, NY to David and Ethel "Henrietta" (Beardsley) Ferris.
She graduated from Au Sable Forks High School in 1962 and then worked for the Grand Union grocery store for 34 years. Rita was also a diligent servant for her community. She served as a Black Brook board member for 12 years, Historian for 2 years, and a proud member of the Au Sable Forks Fire Department for over 50 years. Lastly, she served as president for the American Legion Unit 504, the Fairview Cemetery Board, and the Au Sable Forks School Alumni Committee.
Rita (Ferris) Rougeau married Alfred H. Rougeau on May 25, 1968 (53 years). Rita's sister, Jean, was like their daughter to them and Michelle & James Yourdon were like their grandchildren.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Rougeau (4/15/22), father, David Ferris, mother, Henrietta, sister, Goldia Harrod, and nephew, Stephen Polyblank.
She is survived by her sisters, Barbara (Albert) Stickle, Angie (Alan) Polyblank, Ruth (Brian) Yourdon, Jean (Dale) Yourdon with her two children, James (Tanya) Yourdon and Michelle (Tim) Miller, her brother-in-law, Richard M. Rougeau, several nieces and nephews, and lastly, her special friend, Pam (Chris) Garrow.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Rita's life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home, 3 College St., Au Sable Forks, NY.
