Mary Pelkey

November 12, 1946 — February 6, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Pelkey, aged 78, who left us on February 6th, surrounded by love. A devoted partner, cherished family member, and loyal friend, Mary's passing leaves a lasting void in the hearts of all who knew her.

Mary was born on November 12, 1946, to Kenneth and Jennie (Denton) Pelkey. She proudly served her country with honor as a Sergeant in the United States Army, where she took on the roles of both a drill sergeant and a labor and delivery nurse, guiding new soldiers with discipline and care while also bringing new life into the world.

In a beautiful twist of fate, as Mary was entering the service, her partner, Theresa Avery, was transitioning out of the Navy. Their paths crossed briefly, but it wasn't until later that they became a devoted couple. Together for 39 years, Mary and Theresa built a life filled with love, mutual respect, and an abundance of laughter.

Mary lived in Wilmington, NY, where she was known for her many passions and talents. A gifted musician, she found joy in singing and playing the guitar. She also had an adventurous spirit, often seen metal detecting in search of hidden treasures. She was a dedicated coin collector and an avid reader who was always eager to learn more. But above all, Mary's greatest gift was her heart she was a caretaker to her elderly neighbors, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a listening ear. She was known for her heart-to-heart conversations and the wisdom she shared, leaving those around her feeling heard, valued, and understood.

Mary is survived by her loving partner, Theresa Avery; her daughter, Shannon Avery (Joe Trageser); her three sisters, Arlene Franton of Florida, Roxanne Ward of Jay, NY, and Sandra Galbraith of Harkness, NY; her brother, Pete (Alice) Pelkey; her best friend, Ron Keegan; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Jennie (Denton) Pelkey; her sisters, Catherine (Francis) Peck, Betty (Rod) Cooper, and Frances (Frank) Mason; and her brothers, Kenneth and Cecil (Pete) Pelkey.

Mary's kindness, integrity, and unwavering spirit touched countless lives. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion that will be carried forward by those who knew and loved her.
