Donald Joseph Shambo passed away March 31, 2023 in Plattsburgh, NY. He was born on December 12, 1936 to Edward and Myrtle (Eddy) Shambo in Au Sable Forks, NY.
Don was a lifetime Yankee fan and his love for the game shined through his personality. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1962 and received an honorable discharge. When he came home, he worked at Whiteface Mountain in the early 1960's.
He then went on to serve the people of New York at the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision as a correction officer at Dannemora for 30 years. During his time off, in between watching the Yankees play, he loved to spend time with his family. When Christmas arrived each year, he loved to play Santa Claus for families and events in the area. The joy this brought to the children made Don so happy to see.
Don was a proud supporter of the North Country Honor Flight and was selected to be a participant, which was something he cherished.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Betty Ann; his son Don (D.J.) Shambo; stepdaughter Dorinda Murphy; and two wonderful grandchildren Thomas (Devann) Murphy and Melissa Murphy.
A Graveside Service will be held at Fairview Cemetery on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., there will be no calling hours.
Donations may be made in Don's memory to the North Country Honor Flight, P.O. Box 2644, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
Services were entrusted to Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home, Au Sable Forks, NY.
